Tribute & Message From The Family

Loving Mother, Grandmother and Sister

On Wednesday July 10, 2019, Bernadette McLaughlin, revered former principal of the Green Meadow Elementary School, passed away peacefully at the age of 79.

Bernie was born in Somerville on September 5, 1939 to Joseph F. and Catherine M. (Conway) Tiffany. After graduating from Emmanuel College, she began a lifelong commitment to educating children at the Proctor School in Somerville. Soon thereafter, she married John V. McLaughlin of Medford with whom she had two children that she loved deeply. The family moved to St. Louis, MO where Bernie worked as an elementary school teacher for fifteen years in the University City public school system. Following the sudden death of her husband in 1976, Bernadette embodied her commitment to the value of education by completing a Master's degree in Educational Administration at the prestigious Washington University in St. Louis while working full-time and raising two children as a single parent.

In 1984, Bernadette returned to the East Coast to become the principal of the Bernice A. Ray Elementary School in Hanover, NH and then the principal of Pittsfield Elementary School in Pittsfield, NH. After serving the children of New Hampshire for over a decade, she took over as principal of the Green Meadow Elementary School in Maynard where she was cherished for uniting a community of teachers, parents and students until her retirement in 2010. Bernie was well known for greeting every child by name as they walked through the doors of the school each morning. She leaves behind a legacy of countless children's lives that she has influenced and guided over four decades.

In addition to being a dedicated teacher, Bernie was known for her dry wit and her legendary skills as a bargain shopper. She was quick to snap up any item being sold at the right price regardless of whether anyone she knew had a need for it. Extraordinarily generous with family, friends and acquaintances, Bernie knew she would eventually be able to find the right recipient for every item. She was renowned for being able to pull anything you might express an interest in from the seemingly bottomless trunk of her car. She was particularly known for spoiling her beloved grandchildren with enormous boxes of gifts on every occasion and even on no occasion at all.

Bernadette is survived by her son John McLaughlin, her daughter Dr. BethAnn McLaughlin, her sister Claire Tomko, her brother Joseph Tiffany, Jr. and her sister-in-law Madalyn (Gigante) Tiffany. She will also be greatly missed by five grandchildren: Connor, Billy and Molly McLaughlin and Colin and Amelia Stanwood.

Visiting hours will be this Friday July 12th from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Fowler-Kennedy Funeral Home on 42 Concord Street in Maynard. A brief service open to the community and former students will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday July 13th also at the Fowler-Kennedy Funeral Home. A memorial mass is being planned for the Fall. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Green Meadow Elementary School.

Bernie and I were good friends. I met Bernie when I was a young teacher in the University City School District. She was my principal at the time. I did not know my good friend had passed. Our condolences to Bernie's family. She was an excellent educator and wonderful person. My mom, Effie, was extremely saddened to hear the news of the passing of her friend. In the Greek church we always say "May their memory be eternal". Bernie's memory will forever be eternal in the countless individuals and families she touched and guided. Thinking of you all. We hope to attend the memorial service in the fall.

While my children did not have the good fortune to be under Bernie's watchful and caring eyes, my grandchildren very fortunately did. As I dropped them off many times, I was able to see Bernie's warm and personal welcome to each child as they entered school, in any type of weather. She was remarkable and well loved by my grandchildren. I also had the pleasure of being a colleague from the high school and a supporter through my foundation. She was so helpful and appreciated the good work done by many. As a community we were fortunate to have Bernie as a vital part of our town. I also was able to experience some of Bernie's renowned bargain shopping as a few of us accompanied her on a shopping adventure one day. I absolutely loved it and knew I could call her at any time to find out where to buy anything. She will be missed by so many but her good works, her fun personality, and quick intelligence will be remembered forever.

Bernie was such a wonderful caring, funny woman...what a delight she was. My children attended Pittsfield Elementary when she was principle, she made us parents feel like we were one of her dearest friends and treated my kids like they were her kids. She would drive by houses of her students during the summer months and leave them books to read. We have recounted this to others so many times when we mention her, because she is one of those people in life you just don't forget. We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to her family...she was such a bright light in this sometimes dark world.

My condolences to the family of a woman I really looked up to. She was one of the first principals I worked under and was an amazing lady. She knew her staff well and I still have the little gadgets she would buy for each staff member to either end the year or start the school year off and it had something to do with your job or personality. She was a gift, so happy to have known her. May all your memories of her give you comfort at this difficult time. Sincerely Pam Plante

Bernie approached life with gusto and enthusiasm. Always ready to help family and friends. Bernie had many good friends who valued her friendship and opinions. She gave me valuable shopping lessons and shopping we definitely did enjoy together. Her family was always on top of her list. I received many surprise gifts via the post office. A few weeks ago, she mailed me delicious Blueberry/Banana Muffins. Bernie was a giver and thrived by giving to family and friends. She gave of herself to her children and grandchildren that she treasured and who brought her so much pride. I am glad to say that Bernie was a good friend and happy that we always ended our phone calls saying 'Love You'.
